Free Online Webinar: What has the Church got to do with mental health?
Date: Tuesday, 24 November 2020
Time: 8.00pm – 9:45 pm
What has the Church got to do with mental health? It depends on what we think the purpose of the Church is and what we associate poor mental health with.
The Church can be a sanctuary where people with poor mental health find their solace, respite, meaning and hope; the Church can also be threatening if it imposes unbearable shame and unrealistic standards on those living with poor mental health.
The Church is called to be the former but often, it resembles the latter because mental health-related stigma and misperceptions are as rampant within the Church as it is outside. To redeem the rightful place of the Church in soul care, we must be an informed and safe community where vulnerability is recognised as being human rather than an indicator of our character or our performance.
We need Church to be a community who is deeply convicted that the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ is sufficient for us, for His power is made perfect in our weakness. How can the Church become a more informed community and what can the Church do to provide a safe community for people struggling with poor mental health?

mental distress and/or mental disorders. Her ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for individuals
living with mental health challenges.
