Master of Theology (MTh) – Old Testament Studies

The Modular Master of Theology (MTh) in Old Testament Studies is designed for those seeking deeper engagement with the Old Testament through rigorous academic study and practical application. This programme provides advanced training in Old Testament interpretation, theology, and historical context, equipping students for teaching, and scholarly research. Each module is crafted to provide students with both academic rigor and practical application, ensuring they gain a well-rounded understanding of the Old Testament.

  1. Learning Outcomes of the MTh in Old Testament Programme

The overall learning outcomes of the MTh in Old Testament Studies:

      • Interpret and exegete Old Testament texts using advanced hermeneutical and linguistic skills.
      • Analyze key theological themes such as covenant, law, poetry, prophecy, and wisdom in relation to Christian faith.
      • Understand the Ancient Near Eastern context and its influence on Old Testament writings.
      • Teach and communicate Old Testament theology effectively in academic, church, and ministry settings.
      • Grasp the current scholarship of the Old Testament research and wrestle with difficult texts. Conduct independent research that contributes to biblical and theological scholarship
  1. MTh in Old Testament Studies Programme Structure

All candidates are required to complete six (6) of the following modules and a thesis:

Module 1: Teaching the Old Testament

This module explore effective methods for communicating Old Testament themes in academic, church, and ministry settings. This module covers pedagogical strategies, curriculum development, and the challenges of teaching Old Testament texts in contemporary contexts. It equips students with the skills to engage learners effectively, whether in seminary classrooms or church education programs.

Module 2:  Old Testament Theology

This module delves into the major theological themes found in the Old Testament, such as covenant, law, prophecy, the nature of God, and messianic hope. This course helps students understand the continuity and distinctiveness of Old Testament theology and its relationship to the New Testament, providing a solid foundation for biblical teaching and preaching.

Module 3: Advanced Hermeneutics and Homiletics: Old Testament

Focuses on interpreting and preaching the Old Testament, students learn to apply advanced hermeneutical principles, analyze Hebrew literary structures, and develop sermons that effectively communicate Old Testament messages to modern audiences. This module ensures that students gain the skills to connect Old Testament teachings to contemporary Christian faith and practice.

Module 4: Advanced Hebrew Reading and Exegesis

In this module, students engage in close readings of Hebrew texts, improving their ability to analyze syntax, grammar, and meaning. This module emphasizes linguistic precision and theological depth, enabling students to conduct exegetical research and in-depth textual analysis. By working with critical resources and scholarly commentaries, students develop the necessary tools for serious Old Testament scholarship.

Module 5: Pentateuch Studies / Wisdom Studies

The Pentateuch Studies / Wisdom Studies module allows students to specialize in one of two significant areas of Old Testament literature. Those focusing on Pentateuch Studies will examine the foundational books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, exploring themes of creation, law, covenant, and Israel’s identity. Alternatively, students choosing Wisdom Studies will engage with Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes, , analyzing their poetic structures, exegetical and theological insights, and its significance to Old Testament Theology.

Module 6: Ancient Near Eastern Context of the Old Testament

This module connects essential background knowledge on the history, culture, socio-politics and religions of the Ancient Near East (ANE) with the Old Testament texts. This module examines archaeological discoveries, ANE mythology, and legal traditions that help illuminate the historical and literary context of Old Testament writings. Understanding the cultural and historical setting of biblical texts enriches students’ ability to interpret Scripture accurately and appreciate its broader significance. Together, these modules form a comprehensive and immersive study of the Old Testament, equipping students with advanced theological insight and exegetical skills to serve in academia, ministry, and biblical research.

Module 7: Research Methodology

This module requires the candidates to do further research in their area of interest, explore an appropriate research methodology, and craft a well-defined research topic leading to a thesis proposal to be submitted and approved by STM

Thesis

A thesis in the area of Anglicanism is required. Word count of 20,000-30,000 words (excluding footnotes and bibliography) is expected. Suitable supervisors will be appointed by STM with recommendation from the Programme Committee.
